What this actually does

There is no shortage of directories. A directory hands you a list and leaves the reading to you. This screens a household against rules we have read from official sources, and tells you which ones plausibly fit.

  1. You tell us where, and a little about the situation

    ZIP code first, because nearly every rule in this field turns on geography. Then only the questions that change an answer. We do not ask for a Social Security number, a Medicare number, a VA file number, or anything from a bank.

  2. We screen against rules, not keywords

    Age, income, household size, service, insurance, living situation and stated needs are checked against the written rule for each program. The check is deterministic: the same answers always produce the same result, and we can show our working a year later.

  3. You get a plan you can take to an office

    Which programs to pursue and in what order, what to bring, who to call, and the official page for each one. Printable, and savable behind a private link.

Five answers, and one of them is "we do not know"

Most tools in this space give two answers, yes and no, and quietly turn "we did not check" into "no". That is the failure that costs families money, so we separated it out.

    We hold no verified rules for this program in this county. That is our gap, not a no.

  • Ruled out

    The household fails a written rule. We show you the rule and when we read it, so you can check us. We show these rather than hiding them, because knowing what to skip returns time.

Why a wrong "no" is the error we design against

A wrong yes

Costs one wasted application. Annoying, and recoverable in an afternoon.

A wrong no

Costs money a household was owed, and they never find out, because people who are told no stop looking.

So the two are not held to the same standard. A rule we have not verified is not allowed to rule anybody out: it downgrades the answer to "possible" instead. Missing information is never treated as a failure. Not mentioning income is not the same as having a high one.
